Regular eye tests are important to maintain the health of your eyes and to achieve the best standard of vision for you at all times.
Your Optometrist will advise you how often you should have your eyes tested. This is usually every 2 years.
The cost of the standard eye test at Ideal Eyes is £30.00.
The advanced eye exam only costs an additional £45, and takes a further 45 minutes.
If you are aged 16 or under, or over 60 your eye test will be FREE on the NHS. There are several other categories of people who also qualify. Click here to visit the NHS website find out more, or call us at any of our practices for advice.
What to expect
Each of our fully qualified Ophthalmic Opticians (Optometrists) are trained to take all the necessary steps to ascertain the health of your eyes and to prescribe any optical correction needed to give you the best possible vision.
He/she will ask you questions about your general health, as well as specific questions relating to your eyes. Any information you give in the test room is in complete confidence.
Whilst you are comfortably seated in the adjustable testing chair your Optometrist will have a close and detailed look at the external part of your eye, and then, using a specialised light, will examine the interior parts of your eye, including the optical nerve and the retina (back surface of your eye). This process is straight forward and painless and will only require you to change the angle of your gaze from time to time.
To determine your prescription, your Optician will fit you with a special frame which allows him/her to try lenses of differing strengths and configurations.
If appropriate your Optician will also check the pressures in your eyes ('puff of air test') and/or conduct a 'field of vision' test. These are simple and completely non-invasive procedures, but they can be invaluable in detecting any problems, which you may be completely unaware of at this stage.
Your Optometrist will provide explanations and guidance throughout the test, which will take 30-45 minutes. You are free to ask any questions you may have about the procedure and your Optician's findings.
Advanced Eye Exam
Ideal Eyes has invested in some specialist equipment which makes your eye exam even more effective since they enhance the ability of our Opticians to identify any issues with the health of your eyes.
Fundus Cameras take photographs of the inside of the back of your eye, an invaluable tool for monitoring of the health of the central areas of your eyes.
The GDX system measures the thickness of the nerve layer at the back of the eye to make visible any early indication of a variety of eye problems, most importantly Glaucoma. This is a treatable condition, but it can cause blindness if undiagnosed for a long period.
We use leading technology from 'the retina company' Optos. The Optomap ultra-wide display digital retinal scan represents leading edge eye care technology. Whereas traditional methods show only 10-20% of the retina at one time, Optomap displays more than 80% of this part of your eye in one panoramic image. Again, this increases the chances of early detection of any eye disease or associated health problems that present in your peripheral retina. Read more about Optos technology.
